While a relatively minor change, some may have noticed that sexual orientation has been added to the
Cabarrus County Schools Non-Discrimination notice (scroll down to the bottom of the main page). I'm a big believer of showing support of any steps taken to increase equality in our society, so I wrote to the Title IX coordinator of Cabarrus County Schools.
Dr. Sain,

A friend of mine has brought it to my attention that sexual orientation has been added to the Non-Discrimination policy on the Cabarrus County Schools website after she contacted you about the possibility of such an addition.

As a former student of Cabarrus County Schools as well as a future educator, I would like to express my gratitude for your commitment to equal protection in our schools.

It has been a concern of mine as I have been working towards my undergrad degree in elementary education that employees may not be protected from discrimination based on sexual orientation. The addition of sexual orientation to the Non-Discrimination policy has helped relieve some of my anxieties.

This addition to the policy is a needed acknowledgment of the many obstacles LGBTQ youth face in their day to day lives. Given the recent events that have been broadcasted in the news, I am especially grateful that you have been so receptive to suggestions that could help improve the experiences of students and employees in Cabarrus County Schools.

I know that there are many other students and employees who will greatly benefit from the extended protection. I wanted to make sure you would hear from at least one such former student that we appreciate any steps that you and your colleagues take in order to insure equality in our public schools.
Thank you for your service,
Jessica *
